180 Degree Rule.

180 DEGREE RULE

The 180 degree rule is an invisible line across the middle of a 360 degree circle surrounding the characters within the scene. The rule is that the camera cannot change from one half of the circle to the other when doing 'Shot Reverse Shot' because the audience would get confused and think that they are talking to themselves. The only way you can break this rule without confusing the audience is to take the camera through the line without having any edits or it stopping. It takes the audience through the line allowing them to see that the camera has changed perspective.
